Comic Caption Challenge Guidelines
👉🏽 Please read the following before enter any of my comic captions. 👈🏽
From time to time, I hold Comic Caption Challenges on social media. I’m starting them up again on Bluesky, using the hashtag #ComicCaptionChallenge. I created the page you are reading now to have somewhere I could point people to.
Goal of my Comic Caption Challenges
Main goal of these challenges is to encourage community participation but also because most people are way funnier than I am. 😁
How I choose which caption to use:
I use criteria which are unapologetically subjective, though I lean toward caption suggestions that:
- Are clever and short.
- Are family-friendly.
- Don’t rely on crude, rude, or mean humour.
- Are not political.
However, the final decision is mine. I also reserve the right NOT to use any caption at all.
Who owns the copyright:
I retain copyright of the art. The person who wrote the caption retains copyright of the writing.
How the comic will be used:
I share the comic on my social media. My co-creator is welcome to do the same.
If someone approaches me about sharing a collab comic on any venue (newsletter, website, etc) and I’m fine with it, however, I will ask them to contact my co-creator for permission as well. I would appreciate the same courtesy if my co-creator is approached.
If someone approaches me about licensing a collab comic (e.g. $$ is involved) and I am ok with the licensing arrangement, I would make sure the arrangement is also ok with my co-creator, and would split any proceeds with my co-creator.
Because of the above, I will usually ask my co-creator for their contact info, just in case. This info will be kept private and not used for any other purpose.
Please read the above before enter any of my comic captions. Some of you may think I’m going overboard with all the information, but I think it much better to set expectations properly to avoid potential future misunderstandings. I also know there are some out there who are more relaxed about copyright than others, especially when it comes to human creativity.
