MCDB review: AMAZING SPORTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD by Douglas McLaughlin and Michelle Griffis (Language Lizard)
Competitive snowball throwing? Tuna tossing? Elephant polo? Ostrich racing? Young readers can find out about these and many more fascinating and fun sports from different cultures in AMAZING SPORTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD by Douglas McLaughlin and Michelle Griffis (Language Lizard). This book is not only a fun way to introduce young readers to sports from different parts of the globe but may also encourage some to try new sports!
Here’s a message from the author of the book, Douglas McLaughlin:
Thank you to Language Lizard for providing me with the ebook version.
In addition to being an MCDB reviewer, I am delighted to be an Author Sponsor for this year’s Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2023 (1/26/22) is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
Part of the Language Lizard Explore collection, Amazing Sports From Around The World would be a wonderful addition to any classroom, especially middle grade. The book also comes with multicultural lesson plans, activities, and audio to help educators in diverse classrooms. Just browse reviews from educators, and you’ll see how educators from first grade up through middle grade and ESL instructors use the book in the classroom.
Check out Japan’s Yukigassen (competitive snowball fighting) and Australia’s Tuna Toss:
The art is manga-like and fun, with lots of action and visual interest…so much energy!
While this book is geared toward young readers, adult readers will also find the info provided fascinating. I was motivated to do more research about some of these sports and activities, and I loved how this peek into other cultures could motivate readers of all ages to want to find out more.
Educators! You can find all kinds of multicultural lesson plans, activities, and audio files for Amazing Sports From Around The World on this Language Lizard website page.
