Seeing Jonathan Coulton at the Lula Lounge tonight!

jcoulton

Woohoo! Jeff and I are meeting Jodi and James at the Lula Lounge tonight to see Jonathan Coulton perform. I've never seen Coulton live, so I'm pretty excited. Thanks to Tom Jeffers for giving me the heads-up about this show -- he and others are going to see it this weekend.

Paul and Storm will be opening for him. From their JoCopedia page: "Paul Sabourin and Greg 'Storm' DiCostanzo are an Arlington, Virginia-based comedic musical duo. They had formerly been half of the a cappella group Da Vinci's Notebook. When that group went on hiatus the two struck out on their own, with Paul playing keyboard and penny whistle and Storm on the guitar. " You can find out more about them on their blog.

I got hooked on Jonathan Coulton's songs after hearing Tony Fabris perform Skullcrusher Mountain at a filk convention.

By the way, don't you think Coulton bears an uncanny resemblance to my friend Rand (posing with Jodi) in the photo below?

Anyway, I've been posting some of my favourite Jonathan Coulton tunes on my Blip.fm account. Plus I'll include a few here:

Saw JoCo recently in NYC (it turned out that several other filkers were there, as well, including Mike and Rennie, who had surprised Liam with the show!), and he was, as usual, all sorts of fun to see. Unfortunately, the venue had a strict 11PM curfew (which actually meant everyone out the door by then), so some songs were left out :-(

If you don't know, there's a http://www.jonathancoulton.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page" rel="nofollow">Jonathan Coulton Wiki that includes entries for many of his shows, including setlists and links to online videos and recordings. (I think I found something approaching 15 complete shows recorded and available for download.) And he's very recording-friendly. Not that I'm hinting or anything... :-)

Enjoy the show!

Duh. Shows me not to post without triple care, when tired after work. I just saw that you linked to the JoCoWiki. I'll just fall over for eight hours, now. Please ignore exuberant but unnecessary fanboy sharing in second paragraph above...

hee hee hee.... you are in for a *treat*, my friend. Paul and Storm are a total stitch....

And if you haven't heard JoCo's Mandelbrot Set... ultimate math geek rock song EVAR. It's complex! (Yaknow, funny, I could hear UT working that up a capella... would take some serious work, but.... :)

WAH. Boo to JoCo for playing Toronto on a *Thursday*, when I could not possibly make it, and for never coming to Buffalo at all.

But I do hope you have a good time, even in my envy. ;)

I got to see Jonathan Coulton with Paul & Storm as the opening band here in Ann Arbor at The Ark back on March 6th. He is so far beyond what we seen of him performing at ConFluence a few years back. Heck, from talking to the local audience, he was so far beyond his performance in Pontiac, Mich just 9 months before this show. His Ark show included P&S coming back to help mid-JoCo set with backing vocals and such. It really helped put some musical variety into the show.
