Thank you for visiting my Appearances page of info! I enjoy talking with young readers as well as adult writers and illustrators, and have given talks and/or workshops at the Vermont College Of Fine Arts (VCFA, 2019), Toronto Public Library (Sophie's Studio graphic novel writing workshop for young people, 2016 & 2019), picture book writing (Highlights Foundation, 2018), SCBWI Winter Conference 2017, SCBWI Summer Conference 2018, various SCBWI regional conferences, CANSCAIP (2014), nErDcamp (Michigan), and other events. You can browse my book tour reports through the U.S. in 2014 (NAKED!), 2015 (WHERE ARE MY BOOKS?), 2017 (SEA MONKEY & BOB) and 2018 (I'M SAD).

Schedule Notes

These days, I am being invited to more events than I have time to attend. While I am deeply flattered at the growing interest in me and my work, I have learned that I need to also protect enough time for my creative time (both contracted work AND new work) as well as my personal time.

Please note that because I already annual commitments in February, April, June, August and November, I am less likely to want to make more commitments during those months. So much will depend on what time commitment (including prep time) is involved and what is going on in my own work schedule.

With rare exception, I do not commit to events more than a year in advance.

Debbie's Presentations and Workshops

I'm available for virtual visits to schools, libraries, literacy events, book clubs and conferences to talk about my work and process. I've posted a list of topics below but am open to suggestions! I can adjust my presentations to be suitable to all age levels. I offer 15 minute virtual visits for free (to schools who have read at least one of my books and whom I have not visited in the previous 2 years); longer visits are charged a fee. Feel free to browse feedback and photos from educators and students about my virtual visits.

Free 15-minute virtual visits include a reading (optional) and a Q&A. For drawing demos, please book a regular virtual visit. I do a very limited number of these free visits throughout the year, so please do book as early in advance as possible.

Follow-up after one of my art workshops via Skype

Regular virtual visits include any of the books I've written and/or illustrated, how a picture book is created, what I've learned during her journey to publication, writing and illustrating comics, creativity and inspiration, found object drawing demos, digital drawing techniques, writing picture books, illustrating picture books, or a combo. I am flexible in format; just let me know what you'd like and I'll let you know if it's possible.

I love virtual visits because I have access to more show-and-tell materials that would be a challenge to lug around with me for in-person visits. In past visits during Q&A, for example, I have played my flute and tin whistle, did drawing demo with a variety of non-digital media as well as digital, shown students proofs and sketches and photos, worn costumes, used props, shown them around my office, and so much more.

Photos are welcome but no audio/video recording, please.

I'm also available for a limited number of in-person visits, but transportation (I don't drive) and a busy work schedule through the coming year make this more of a challenge. Here are my fees.

If you're interested in having me visit, please fill out this form.
